Feeding Program for Orphans & Vulnerable Children

With some generous support from the Children’s Hunger Relief Fund, we have been able to provide a supply of maize and beans to some of the most vulnerable families in Chogoria. Working with several community leaders, we identified 27 families who need a little extra help to climb the ladder out of poverty.

Many of the caregivers are elderly grandmothers, as these women are generally the ones who bear the responsibility when a child’s parents have gone.  We visited the homes of each family to learn about the challenges they face in their daily lives. The home visits were humbling and we learned a lot about what it means to struggle daily for water, food, shelter, and health.

One of the main goals of this program is to motivate the larger Chogoria community to come together and support the vulnerable families in their community. It should not be the responsibility of an international NGO to make sure each family in Chogoria is receiving proper nutrition and the basic needs of survival. Rather, neighbors, family members, and the extended community have plenty of resources to uplift the families that are most in need. Sharing this concept of collective responsibility and generosity is something that will take time, but we believe the people of Chogoria have the capacity, willingness, and kindness to empower their own community.
