Using Starlink to Deliver Health Education in Remote Parts of Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya

Using Starlink for health education

HopeCore's Innovative Use of Starlink for Health Education

In the heart of Kenya, the Tharaka Nithi region is a landscape of sparse terrain where limited infrastructure poses significant challenges to healthcare access. In this setting, HopeCore is pioneering a transformative approach to empower Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and bridge the critical gaps in healthcare. With a patient-to-doctor ratio in Kenya of 1:17,000— 17 times the WHO's recommendation— this region urgently needs innovative solutions to enhance primary healthcare and promote disease prevention.

HopeCore has been training CHPs by traveling to their meeting points using 4WD vehicles, but traditional training methods are a significant hurdle due to the scarcity of tarmacked roads. Relying on 4WD vehicles also contributes to carbon emissions, further impacting the region environmentally. We urgently need more sustainable practices as shown during the persistent heavy rains and flooding in 2024.

In response to these challenges, HopeCore is adopting technology to deliver sustainable and environmentally conscious training and capacity-building sessions to CHPs. It replaces vehicles with motorbikes and employs a compact setup with a projector, laptop camera, speakerphone, and a Starlink dish for internet connectivity. Starlink, a project by SpaceX, provides high-speed internet to remote areas using a network of satellites.

This innovative setup allows CHPs in the field and trainers in the office to conduct interactive video calls, providing real-time instruction on emerging health issues and best practices. This approach eliminates the need for extensive travel and creates a dynamic and engaging learning environment accessible to CHPs, regardless of their geographic location.

Looking to the future, HopeCore plans to establish static training centers within health facilities. These centers, equipped with Starlink stations, will serve as hubs for ongoing learning and collaboration. They will enable CHPs to remotely consult with nurses and doctors and access resources to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Despite formidable challenges, HopeCore remains committed to empowering CHPs and improving healthcare access for all. This initiative proves that innovation and sustainability can work together to promote a healthier world.

Support our innovative use of technology that allows HopeCore to deliver health education to our remote regions!
