Transforming Education Through Health: The Kaare Primary School Success Story

For years, Kaare Primary School struggled with high absenteeism due to intestinal and skin conditions caused by parasitic and fungal infections. According to the World Health Organization, intestinal worms cause an estimated 1.5 billion infections annually, contributing to school absenteeism worldwide. With HopeCore’s intervention, we’re seeing improved student health and school attendance.

A Positive Change: HopeCore’s School Health Program

Since 2016, HopeCore’s school health program has provided essential health services to address such diseases. During a visit to Kaare Primary School last year, it was discovered that 54 out of 150 pupils were affected by ringworms, resulting in 36% of the students missing school. After receiving antifungal treatment, all 54 students fully recovered and are back in school.

One 8-year-old student was initially too embarrassed to attend school because she had ringworm. However, she is now confident, attends school regularly, and excels academically. The school has also reported a 90% improvement in attendance and student performance.

“We are extremely grateful to HopeCore. Previously, we had 50% absenteeism, but now our students are healthier, happier, and at least two students from each class are ranking in the top 10 in the Kiera zone,” says Mr. Robert, the Health Champion teacher.

A Holistic Approach: The WASH Program

Beyond deworming treatment and monitoring, we’ve also implemented a Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation (WASH) program, providing soap and WaterGuard chlorine disinfectant to promote proper handwashing and access to clean drinking water. Our initiative not only prevents ringworm but also addresses the root causes of absenteeism, like diarrhea and intestinal worms.

There’s still much work to be done, but together, we can create a healthier future for all children, one school at a time.
