A Healthful Transformation: How Evans and His Family Overcame Malnutrition
David and his wife, Joy, from Kanoa Village, are grateful as they watch their son Evans thrive—something they once thought was impossible. At just two years old, Evans weighed only 5 kg and suffered from severe malnutrition, leaving his parents deeply worried about his health. However, their worries eased when HopeCore intervened.
Evans' condition was first identified during a community health outreach in September 2018 and he was immediately enrolled in HopeCore’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic. Evans started receiving vitamin A supplements and dewormers to boost his health. At the same time, his mother Joy was provided with nutrition education, including advice on proper diet and meal frequency. HopeCore also educated her on family planning, to ensure that Evans had enough time to recover fully.
Evans Triumph Over Malnutrition
Thanks to regular check-ups and growth monitoring, Evans’ health significantly improved. After a year and a half, he weighed 11.2 kg—a healthy weight for his age.
This progress motivated and reassured Evans' parents. They consistently attended clinics and adhered to nutrition education, which led to continued improvement in Evans’s health. When he was four, he weighed 15.4 kg, marking a significant milestone in his recovery.
Embracing Sustainable Farming for Better Health
Evans' remarkable progress inspired his parents to start growing food crops to support his continued growth. They began growing vegetables, cereals, and fruits such as mangos and bananas. This decision aided Evans’s health and helped the family adopt healthier eating habits.
"I am grateful to HopeCore for enlightening us about the importance of proper nutrition,’’ David shared. ‘’We adhered to all the advice, and this completely changed our life. Eating healthier not only helped our son recover, but it also improved our family’s overall health.’’
Today, Evans is nine years old, healthy, and attending school, where he continues to receive treatment through our school health program.
