Kinga Jamii
We’re very excited to introduce an innovative new project at Village Hopecore with our partner Population Services International. Kinga Jamii (Kiswahili for “Protecting Our Family & Community”) is a collaboration between the public health and Micro Enterprise departments that provides mosquito nets, water treatment, and condoms to community groups. Village HopeCore sells these health products to community groups which then sell the products to the community at large. This is an income-generating project for both Village HopeCore and community members. These health products are highly subsidized, allowing us to sell them at about half the cost they are sold in the market, giving more people access to essential disease prevention tools.
Proper mosquito net usage has been shown to reduce malaria by 40% and we are looking forward to evaluating and promoting the positive effects this program will have in the community. In the past two weeks, 600 mosquito nets have made their way into the homes of Chogorians and people have earned over $70 for food, clothing, school fees, and medicines. The organization has also earned $70 to use for operating costs such as vehicle fuel. These numbers are sure to increase as the program becomes more established. We anticipate distributing over 1,000 nets each month, bringing $100 to the community for personal use and $100 to Village HopeCore every month.
