Business Advisor & Peace Corps Volunteer: Carlo Abuyan (June 2011-July 2013)
Carlo is from Northern California and attended University of California, San Diego. He worked for a non-profit refugee re-settlement organization in Sacramento before joining the Peace Corp. He brings extensive experience with diverse populations and office/financial management. He was placed in Niger and then was evacuated and placed at HopeCore. Carlo left HopeCore and returned to the United States in 2013 to pursue a graduate degree in New York.
Accounting Advisor/Volunteer: James White (September 2013- February 2014)
James is a chartered accountant (ACA) from the UK. He qualified with KPMG in 2009 and has experience in auditing, business restructuring and investment banking. During his 6 month placement he is advising HopeCore on the implementation and sustainability of financial reporting systems, along with applicable controls. He also provides ad hoc training to members of the Finance Team.
Accounting for International Development (AfID) Volunteer: Steven Matters (February-May 2014)
HopeCore has established an ongoing Partnership with AfID, a UK based social enterprise, which places experienced finance professionals with international charities and grassroots community based organisations. The main focus of the AfID volunteer is to develop and enhance the skills, confidence and potential of the permanent employees, in turn helping to increase the financial management capacity of the organisation. Steven Masters, the first AfID volunteer is with HopeCore for a three month period from February through May. Steven is a Chartered Accountant (ACA) with seven years post qualification experience in the Investment and Banking Industries.
Community Economic Development Volunteer, US Peace Corps: Edward Pikaart (2013-2014)
Edward is married with four children and one grandson and is from North Branford, Connecticut, USA. He has worked as a US Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Certified in Financial Management for almost 40 years serving small and growing businesses and their owners providing management advisory, accounting, tax and financial advice.
Public Health Volunteer: Margie Pikaart (2014)
Margie volunteered time with Hopecore International while visiting her husband Ed, a Peace Corps volunteer with HopecCore International for 1 year. She has had the privilege of spending time with the Public Health team, visiting schools in the area. She is a Physical Therapist and has used her skills to assist several students and teachers. She also spent some time in Chogoria hospital in thePhysical Therapy department.
Accounting for International Development (AfID) Volunteer: Mike Griffiths (April-June 2015)
Mike was born in Kenya, but left at the age of 2. He grew up in the UK and has had a career as a Chartered Accountant since qualifying with KPMG. After a long period working in the Finance Division of University College London (UCL), and finishing as a Director of Research Services, he retired last year and is now a volunteer through AfID. He hopes his expertise on financial and system matters in the NGO sector will be useful to HopeCore. He is delighted to have returned to the land of his birth.
Grants & Fundraising and Human Resources Volunteer – Hilary Griffiths
Hilary is a volunteer from the UK visiting Chogoria for 3 months with her husband Mike who is here through Accountants for International Development and working with the HopeCore Finance Department. She is helping the Public Health Team with their Mother-Child Health Clinics and doing some administrative and fundraising work for Village HopeCore. She has been very impressed by the very positive work HopeCore is doing in the community and has greatly enjoyed being here so far.
